Every lesson is individualized and is one-on-one with the instructor. Each child will be evaluated to determine their skill level and their learning style will be emphasized. We teach children from the approximate ages of 6 months to 7 years. The parent or guardian will be asked to join your child in the pool several times to learn and reinforce proper technique and to have fun but is not required.
Infants that are about 6-8 months through about 11 months and are crawling learn to swim and survival floating. They are taught to rotate from a face down position in the water to a back float so that they can rest and breathe and ultimately survive a fall into the water. To attain these skills the typical infant attends 4-5 lessons per week for an average of about 4-6 weeks. Each child is different and some take longer than others.
A child who is about 11 months and older and is very close to walking or already walking, learn a swim-float-swim sequence. They are taught to swim face down using their arms and kicking legs; roll on their back to float when they need air, and then flip over with proper swimming posture to continue swimming. This swim-float-swim sequence can be repeated as many times as is necessary to reach the wall or stairs and safety. Older children that have mastered these skills are also taught basic swim strokes and prepared for more advanced stroke classes.
After accomplishing these skills in a bathing suit, children then practice their skills in clothing. They will usually start in light clothing and work up to heavier winter clothing to ensure their safety. This additional work is critical to survival swimming because most children who find themselves in the water alone are fully clothed.
